    What makes a shower door steam-ready?

    A steam enclosure has to hold vapour, not just stop splashing, and that changes the specification at every point. It runs full height to the ceiling rather than stopping at seven feet, so there is no open gap for steam to escape through. It carries a transom panel across the top, usually hinged or vented, so you can release the steam deliberately after a session instead of trapping it. Every joint is sealed: silicone at the glass-to-wall junctions, a compression seal down the door edge, and a sweep at the base. The hardware has to tolerate constant condensation, so we use finishes and fixings rated for it. A standard shower enclosure fitted into a steam room will leak vapour into the ceiling and the surrounding drywall, which is a much more expensive problem than the door.

    Do I need a transom for steam showers?

    Yes, on any true steam installation. The transom is the panel that closes the gap between the top of the door and the ceiling, and it does two jobs. First it seals the enclosure so the steam generator can actually bring the space up to temperature; without it, warm vapour simply rises out of the opening and the unit runs continuously without ever getting there. Second, and less obviously, a hinged or vented transom is how you let the room dry out afterwards. A sealed enclosure with no way to vent stays saturated between uses, and persistent saturation is what damages grout, hardware and any adjacent drywall over time. We normally specify a transom that can be propped open, so the enclosure is sealed while running and ventilated once you are finished.

    What glass thickness is required?

    We use 1/2 inch (12mm) tempered glass as standard for steam enclosures, and the reason is dimensional rather than a matter of strength. A steam enclosure is taller than a normal one, running the full height of the room, and a tall panel in thinner glass will flex noticeably when the door is operated. The heavier glass stays rigid over that span, which keeps the compression seals in contact along their whole length instead of opening a gap at the top of the swing. It also copes better with the repeated warm-to-cool cycling a steam room goes through, which is a real thermal load rather than a theoretical one. All of it is tempered, so it meets the safety glazing requirements that apply in any bathing area, and every edge is polished before the panel is heat-treated.

    How long does fabrication take?

    Steam enclosures run to the same 14 to 20 day fabrication window as our other custom work, measured from the in-home template rather than from the day you order. What differs is how little tolerance there is in the measurement. A standard shower door can absorb a small error in the seals; a steam enclosure cannot, because a gap anywhere along the perimeter defeats the whole installation. So the template stage takes longer, we check the ceiling line as carefully as the walls, and we confirm where the steam generator head sits before cutting anything. Tempered glass cannot be trimmed after it is made, so a panel measured wrong is a panel remade, which is exactly the delay the extra care at the front avoids. Installation itself usually runs a little longer than a standard door because of the sealing work.

    Will the door handle temperature changes?

    Yes. Tempered glass is made by heating annealed glass past 600 degrees Celsius and cooling the surfaces rapidly, which leaves the outer faces in compression and the core in tension. That process is what gives tempered glass its strength, and it also makes it far more tolerant of thermal change than ordinary glass: a steam cycle is well within what the material handles routinely. The parts that need specifying for the environment are the metal and the rubber, not the glass. Hinges, clamps and fixings are chosen with finishes that resist constant condensation, and the seals are a compression grade rather than the lighter sweep used on a standard door. Fitted that way, the enclosure copes with daily use indefinitely. The failure mode in a badly specified steam room is corroded hardware and perished seals, never the glass itself.
